Sony Cybershot H10

Bought myself a Sony Cybershot H10 recently. Not easy lugging the D200 and lenses along everywhere I go. It is small and lightweight.

I got a teleconverter (0.5X). With some accessories, it should work as fine as the dslr for most of the routine pictures.

For one thing, I particularly enjoy holding it high over people's heads. I can do that with my D200. The high ISO is also good for evening shots without flash. Might be hard for a dslr. Good for travelogues.

Interesting quotes

You are surrounded by miracles, if you take the time to look and feel their presence.

Find yourself by being nobody but yourself.

Everybody wants to be somebody, but few people have the patience to be themselves.

Some people go through a forest and see no firewood.

When you judge others, you don't define them, you define yourself.

Haste always seems to pursue those things which seem to be profitable for ourselves; pausing and saying "no" to this busyness enables us to understand what is best for the general good.

Quote from a friend I haven't met

Hi friends,

One Step Further, One Step Closer
Do more than exist: live.
Do more than touch: feel.
Do more than look: observe.
Do more than read: absorb.
Do more than hear: listen.
Do more than listen: understand.
Do more than think: reflect.
Do more than just talk: say something.

5 Challenges at workplace

According to an article, there are bullies and gossips at your new workplace, just as there probably were at your former school. And the good news is that "the same approaches you took then to overcome those obstacles can still come in handy today."

Here are some of the "common challenges" that we faced during school days and may be facing still at our workplace also:

Challenge No. 1: Bullies exist in the workplace, too. ("Though the actions are subtler, the effect is still the same: frustration and damage to your self-confidence.") Personally, I would include those snobs and bigots who "brow-beat" and also those "smart alecks" who readily pounce on a mistake that others make. We have been branded "stupid", underachievers, weaklings, lame ..... ".

Challenge No. 2: Gossipers have a very good nose for newsy matters and often rake up issues either personally, or through those with that same weakness in their character. In school, we normally would not think they could be that bad. After all, after graduation, most of us would have thought we probably won't meet them again. But, after having read this article, interesting why I did not realise, the gossip monger at my workplace today probably had been the class amateur from another school. Whether these evolve into highly intelligent political beings or vile "mess-comm" professionals, I only wish that my company could rid of these finally.

For my friends who have been unconsciously entangled into those webs that he has been spinning, I wish they would read the next passage.

"Gossiping about co-workers can damage relationships and harm your professional reputation. So try to stay above the fray. Instead of joining a conversation about an inappropriate topic, avoid it by excusing yourself. And if you happen to overhear some "juicy" information, keep it to yourself."

My advice: Don't get played. Seek your develop your own strengths without getting over the backs of some others to gain your altitude in life. To me, there are 2 types of gossipers: those who are weak and those who are wicked. Political animals do have a personal motive or a deep desire to feel belonged. In their everyday conversation, they need to have things to discuss. Policies, People, Practices, Procedures, Personal stuffs of people. They derive satisfaction when people listen or are really affected by what they hear. They get more kicks when people's ears itch for more.

The bible says " Out from the abundance of his heart, the mouth speaks." And so, the chest from a thief will spew out stolen treasures. So, we have to learn to bridle our tongues.

Challenge No. 3: Making friends. Why is it such a challenge, probably greater than that encountered during schooldays? Could it becos as youngsters, we are more "forgiving" as well as more naive? Having been betrayed, finding a trustworthy friend who will stand by me despite all the silly mistakes I have made, and someone's whose friendship is not manipulative is a challenge alright.

Challenge No. 4: Finding a mentor. Mentors are invaluable guides not only at work, but in life as well. Depending on what kind of a mentor you are seeking, he or she must be, first of all, someone you can trust to mould you.

Challenge No. 5: Participating in extracurricular activities. ( I shall cut and paste wholesale the rest of the article here.)

"To balance the time spent in the classroom or at home huddled over a book, you may joined a club, played a sport or participated in a performing art. Keep in mind that maintaining a balance between your personal and professional obligations is still important. Continuously working long hours or taking projects home can cause burnout and lower your satisfaction for your job. "

"Devoting time to outside hobbies or interests can not only prevent this but also enhance your skill set. For instance, doing improvisational comedy on the side can help you think on your feet. And by exploring varied activities, you'll bring unique perspectives and ideas to the workplace. "

"If your workplace begins to remind you of your high school, remember the strategies you used in school to overcome challenges and excel. Chances are the lessons you learned during those four formative years will still serve you well today."

Brilliant Stupidity

"Practical Passion. Questioning Answers. Volatile Stability. Singular Integration. Grounded Reach. Simple Complexity." These is the vision of the mighty Goldman Sachs. It is posted on its website for all to see under the title 'Unrelenting Thinking'.

~ Lucy Kellaway, in Sense & Nonsense in the Office (Prentice Hall)

This article is interesting. Actually, it had not confused me. Not because I undersood it completely but because it passed right through me! I had to read it again and think I finally got a bit enlightened only while being confused by what she was trying to mean when she described Goldman Sach's vision as "brilliant stupidity".

You see, some articles are meant to enlighten or edify. Most would also try to entertain as they educate. (Wonder why most text books writers are not learning from those DIYs or those "for Dummies" writers tho.) Anyway, this article is "unusual" because if you had understood it at first read, you would have been confused at first. Think about it. The pairs contradict each other. The author understood what Goldman Sachs meant and finally described what she read as "Brilliant Stupidity".

This finally makes a lot of sense to what we have been trying to do, at work and at home. Sometimes, in order to achieve stability, one has to stay "fluid". Have you every tried staying balanced in the moving bus without holding on to anything else? You must not lock your knees. But rather, loosen your knees, keep them bent at all times and just "go with the flow".

Sometimes in order to clean up the room, one has to beat up the dust from the mattress.

Interesting?

5Cs (Copied from somewhere)

"Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results."

--Andrew Carnegie

Running a company, even if it is a small business, needs a team of committed and capable employees who can get the job done. But a team is not something that happens by itself. The process of team-building takes time and effort. The end result is to create a work environment in which every person feels like his or her contribution is a vital and valued part of the organization’s success.

We have put together a list of 5 Cs of effective team-building to help you on your way:

1. Clear expectations:

One of the key characteristics of a successful team is clear role delineation of every team member - every person has to know the role he or she is expected to play in the company as well as the roles of the other team members. As the business owner, you have to ensure that every employee in your organization clearly understands how and where he/she fits in the organizational structure. Use organizational charts and staff meetings to facilitate this understanding.

2. Channels of communication:

Create and maintain open channels of communication with your employees. This must not only be between you and your employees, but also among the staff. Create a working atmosphere such that your employees know that you are always available to listen to their concerns. Also encourage them to discuss genuine issues amongst themselves. Without free and unfettered communication, team-building is only a distant dream.

3. Conflict resolution:

Getting a group of people to work together is not a bed of roses. There will invariably be times when the going gets rough and differences come out in the open. Develop conflict-resolution skills among your employees and create a mechanism for grievance redressal, if they can’t resolve their problems on their own. If necessary, arrange for professionals to conduct workshops on this subject.

4. Consequences:

Make members feel responsible and accountable for team achievements. Enable them to understand that each individual contribution is a vital piece in the whole picture. At the same time, encourage individual creativity to blossom by instituting a system of rewards and recognition.

5. Celebrating achievements as a team:

Give your team-building efforts a fillip by celebrating successes as a group. Since every employee plays an important part in the success or failure of your business, it only makes sense to celebrate your achievements as a team. Depending on the size of the achievement, your celebration can be as simple as a pizza party or as spectacular as a company trip to Hawaii.

Use these tips to ensure that the people who make up your small business work together as a team towards the same goal. By empowering and instilling a sense of belonging in your employees, you will have created a successful team that works hard to achieve the best results for you.

Quote of the Week 32 - 2008 (from Elena Goh)

Hi, this is from a lady friend I have never met.

"You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change
rather than allowing it to master you
"

~ Brian Tracy

Sunday, August 03, 2008

Sometimes, it takes just a change of situation that turns everything upside down. When you least expected it. This is how it is, in my life, and my family.

I was one of those fools who had planned in his heart, "Tomorrow we shall do this and this.... " but the tomorrow I have been yearning for, now seems like it gaining distance from my reach. I asked God many times, why brought me here, and then let me suffer. I also watch the people I care about suffer. Sadder because I feel they suffer more because of me. Life is like a sick joke, sometimes. Humans can be happy when they see a newborn baby cast its first smile. But how short the happiness is. Everything is but vanity. Why does God allow people to populate the earth so that in the end, they could murder one another? Even at work, they made friends, and then backstabbed one another?

Beware of the devil. He is more beutiful than you can imagine. His words are very convincing and they are always ready to devour you. Our hearts are proud and egoistic. This makes it easier for it to control us. For a start, learn to bridle our tongues - for it has the power to destroy. Next, do not let your heart be filled with disappointments, and frustration. When the heart is uncomfortable, so it will lash its tongue about and spill its venom. So, always keep your focus on the ultimate goal of your life. Ignore the rest.

Joke from a Singaporean

There was once a very good barber in NEW YORK , he givesFree Haircut to everybody who comes into his shop to have their haircuts. One day a florist goes to him for a haircut. After the cut, he goes to pay the barber and the barber replies:'I am sorry. I cannot accept money from you. I am doing community service.' The Florist is happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open his shop, there is a thank you card and a dozen roses waiting at his door .

A policeman goes for a haircut and he also goes to pay the barberafter the cut. But the barber replies:'I am sorry. I cannot accept money from you. I am doing community service.'

The cop is happy and leaves the shop. The next morning the barber goes to open his shop, there is a thank you card and a dozen donuts waiting at his door ..

A Singaporean software engineer goes for a haircut and he also goes topay the barber after the cut. But the barber replies:'I am sorry. I cannot accept money from you. I am doing community service.'

The Singaporean software engineer is very happy and leaves. The next morning when the barber goes to open his shop, guess what he finds there............

Can you guess?

Come on, think like a Singaporean....

have you got the answer ........... ?

From Elena Goh, again

"Five years from now, you’ll be the same person you are today
except for the people you meet and the books you read."

~ Charlie Jones
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am feeling very tired & drained lately, especially during this period in my life.
Post-JCI and I don't think I will be able to celebrate.

Got this joke from a friend ..

Once PVNR (PV Narasimha Rao), L.K.Advani and Laloo Prasad Yadav were travelling in an autorickshaw. They met with an accident and all three of them died. Yama Raja was waiting for this moment at the doorstep of death. He asks PVNR and Advani to go to HEAVEN.But, for Laloo, Yama had already decided that he should be sent to HELL. Laloo is not at all happy with this decision. He asks Yama as to why this discrimination is being made.

All the three of them had served the public. Similarly, all took bribes, all misused public positions, etc. Then why the differential treatment?

He felt that there should be a formal test or an objective evaluation before a decision is made; and should not be just based on opinion or pre-conceived notions.
Yama agrees to this and asks all the three of them to appear for an English test.
PVNR is asked to spell 'INDIA' and he does it correctly.
Advani is asked to spell 'ENGLAND' and he too passes.
It is Laloo's turn and he is asked to spell 'CZECHOSLOVAKIA'.
Laloo protests that he doesn't know English. He says this is not fair and that he was given a tough question and thus forced to fail with false intent.
Yama then agrees to conduct a written test in Hindi (to give another chance assuming that Laloo should at least feel that Hindi would provide an equal platform for all three).
PVNR is asked to write 'KUTTA BOLA BHOW BHOW'. He writes it easily and passes.
Advani is asked to write 'BILLY BOLI MYAUN MYAUN'. He too passes.
Laloo is asked to write 'BANDAR BOLA GURRRRRR.... .'
Tough one.. He fails again. Laloo is extremely unhappy. Having been a student of history (which the other two weren't), he now requested for all the 3 to be subjected to a test in history. Yama says OK but this would be the last chance and that he would not take any more tests.
PVNR is asked: 'When did India get Independence ?'.
He replied '1947' and passed.
Advani is asked 'How many people died during the independence struggle?'.
He gets nervous. Yama asked him to choose from 3 options:
100,000 or 200,000 or 300,000.
Advani catches it and says 200,000 and passes.
It's Laloo's turn now.

Yama asks him to give the Name and Address of each of the 200,000 who died in the struggle. Laloo accepts defeat and agrees to go to HELL.
Moral of the story:
IF YOUR MANAGEMENT HAS DECIDED TO SCREW YOU, THERE IS NO ESCAPE.

I appreciate my boss for buying us all pizza as we worked through the late evening yesterday.

Auditors should have bought toto and 4Ds.
Of all forms, they had to pick up THAT ONE that had a missing page! Someone slipped. But as usual, everyone will kena. We do not know who, except that something's got to give - one way or another.

Looking back, everyone slipped big time. Probably, everyone will have a couple of turns at the Wailing Wall.

I wish JCI isn't meant for pointing fingers or for shaking heads. I somehow feel many (if not most) of the pains and fright have been a little over-dramatic and probably self-inflicted. Perhaps that's the price we have to pay for wanting to be the top. In the end, I think if we receive the award, everyone deserves it. But I do wish that we do not accuse people of having slipped and still in the end, congratulate him/her for "everything".

We were probably all doing things we have thought to be 'right" until the standards and requirements were updated. Sometimes, a simple answer might have been better than trying to correct history at the last minute. Sometimes, there isn't only ONE right way to do things. There may be BEST PRACTICES, but certainly we can't straightaway treat anything that is different as being "wrong". They have been done that particular way still with the best intentions. Altho different from how you would opine, but they may not be as terrible as you make it sound to be.

I heard "Come on lah, how you could do things like this?!" And there have also been so many "You should haves ... " and "How could yous ... ".

"I had spent much of my waking hours working out how things could be run. Sometimes I wonder why, just a few months ago, I had thought everything was in place. I guessed people don't like to read emails and documents which I had painstakingly phrased and typed so that they could all understand. I stayed back and spent whole evenings just to try envision how certain workflows should run .... typed out the process and asked for opinions. As usual, nobody answered, except 1. In the end, everyone acted as if all the game rules came from me!"

"Hey, did you come up with the program?!" "Who made it run this way? This is stupid lah!!!" "Who gave you the right to ... ?" "Why you all do things like that???" "Why you never checked ?"

Still, I really wish I had stuck to fixing broken chairs and tidying up cables under the office tables. Life would have been so much simpler. I probably could have more fun during my precious remaining days on earth. Or just let me do simple errands, so that I could at least focus on my yoga, music and movies that I've been missing ..... I need to break away from this unnecessary game driving people nuts. Trying to make sure things are done right isn't a hard thing actually, except when you are dealing with others who believe everyone should contribute but there is only one - ONE - right way to do things. Strange, what had been right before, suddenly became the stupidest thing I have done.

Anyway, I should be learning to bake next. By a certain time, I would have been able to cook, bake, and make all sorts of yogurt shakes !!! Not much time left for me actually. Maybe that explains my sleepless nights and while in the day, I feel like a zombie. And my friends are probably looking towards clearing their annual leaves, go holiday, or learning a modality, or expecting a promotion.

This afternoon, while I was rushing through an explanation for a complaint letter, someone "K" came and talked to me. She is going to embark on another career path, and I really feel happy for her. She is good, and smart. She doesn't need to drive through more blind alleys and unmarked humps. I think we are in a hazardous occupation. Come JCI, having best practices listed in the Hall of Excellence is good, but all the more, having just ONE RIGHT WAY tends to keep us all too rooted to only one mindset. Whether that mindset is right or not, probably depends on one feels about the next JCI.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

JCI is finally here to torture everyone.
Come to think of it, it happens for good. Good to recall we are all human after all.

Better not to rely on those who are not counting on themselves to be self-reliant. Better don't waste your time.

Hope

"Even in the worst forest fire there is usually some form of life left that will help to bring life out of the ashes. "

Friday, July 11, 2008

There was this policeman. One day he shot dead a young man by mistake. For some reasons, he was not fully responsible for his death but he resigned from the force anyway. However, he felt so full of guilt that he felt he needed to find out what happened to the dead man's family. To his horror, he found that the dead man had left behind a younger sister who was still schooling at that time. Even before meeting her, his informers have already given him some info regarding the sister and how she had been coping without her only sibling. this man felt sorry for having killed her brother, and so decided he had to be close to that girl and be her guardian angel, just as much as her brother had been to her before he was killed.

This younger sister was brought into the home of an aunt who made her work at her cafe after coming back from school. There had to be some reasons why the relatives did not seem comfortable. She really hated the murderer and had been set on trying to find out how her brother was killed in what she had thought to be an accident. Yet, although it had been finally decided as an accident, the sister had refused to forgive the man who killed her brother.

But little did she know that her brother too, had actually joined the gang to rob the bank. He was new but becos he had needed more money, his bad friends pressurised him into joining them. Unfortunately, the attempt was foiled and within minutes of his first encounter with the police, the brother was shot while trying to help his friend.

Although the hammer is a great tool, it cannot be used in every situation.

Sometimes, you would have walked too far into the thick before you realise your blade is blunt or discover that you have wasted precious time.

Therefore, it is always good to pause a moment before embarking on any pre-set plan of actions.

home decor

Found this huge fish tank on display at a fish shop.

Imagine a really huge one down the side of the hall!!

This reminds me of my trip to the Mekong recently.
I hope our home painting should be of padi fields, neighbour kids, birds and buffaloes and a light shower ... wouldn't it be nice?
hmm.. Wonder if they have such a painting.

Think it will be cooling too.

My dream home

Nice or not? Wish this were my home. There will a thin "ultraviolet" line running along the edges ... and maybe up the stairs also.

Every evening, for a few hours when the lights are dimmer, the place will look nice also.

Yarn Yard

My company is going to be sucked into the JCI whirlpool soon. In the new economy, companies splurge millions and pay some others who could certify them as the #1.
Since there can't be so many #1s in this world, there's another very clever invention to justify even more millions into it:- BEST PRACTICE.

Can't be helped now. It's a whirlpool. Everyone is paying everyone else and it spirals upwards. Rising costs explains more intensified competitions, which in turn fuels this need to rise to the top and gain more visibility. In such an economy, millions are justified for any service that can help companies move up the next rung. This where tertiary industries come in.

It's either a cyclone which gets one sucked up, or a whirlpool which goes the other way. Either into greater debts (borrowings), or greater revenue. These companies probably don't care a dime where the money comes from. In the end, it's always the last layer of ordinary folks down the "food chain" that gets to pay up. There is no revenue for these folks. Only needs that are met. But nowadays, beyond basic needs, these folks have been educated they need better services, and better qualities of things they probably would need only for a short moment. If you don't know what I mean, just look at the TV monitors and carpeted flooring in the hospitals.

I really wish life could be simpler. We have since walked so far from that garden, populated the earth and desecrated all that is in it. We have done the abominable, and raise killers, thieves and cheats. We have ransacked from the earth more than we can consume, from earth to food; from food to trash and from trash to earth. Until we start having to recycle trash. Nowadays, there are already what seems to be good trash and maybe some places, some people have already started eating trash. As for the industries that made tons of money helping others make money, they sometimes need to recycle some of their ex-products & services, just so much like those in the fashion industries. You can recognise a bell-bottom or a sarong whatever the era. Just that in diffierent countries, they name it differently. Someone could have first brought it out from a 3rd-world country and sold it for more in another country just by sticking a few alphabets onto it. This "value-addedness" in a literate economy costs much less if you live in another country.

Time-Out

My recent trip to the Mekong Delta.

Reminds me of the old house I used to live in (Charlton Lane).
It's no longer there of course. But during those days, there were also rambutans, franjipanies (?spellos), bananas, Jackfruits and other trees.

I really miss the care-free days. I notice that children seem to be less concerned about their appearances, mosquitoe-bites, or however filthy the pet is. This is a good thing.

Nowadays, or when we become adults, we become more sensitive about the clothes we wear at work, the cosmetics, the "professional image" we project ("FACIE"), the way we talk and the amount of "environmental noises" that we encounter at our workplaces.

I really hate dealing with coffee-shop politicians. No matter how many layers of lead they surround themselves with. Or even if they are currently not near my CO2. The buzzing in the air can be irksome sometimes and it doesn't matter whether it is coming at you or not. People who tell you that or think this is a small thing obviously has never been bitten by a mosquito.

Smart-alecs and people who, for some reasons, believe they should be better than others, belong together as far as I am concerned. I classify them in the same genus as mossies becos if you are not careful, and by the time you get the itch, its virus has already gotten you into your bloodstream.

Anyway, this is not about these people and thank God, I don't get to encounter these lately. I just want this blog to be about how I wish to live life:- to the fullest and hopefully as little mossie bites as possible. I wish to be like these children, who seemed not to be the least bothered.

Before my cousin and I went there, we had covered ourselves with longs on top of a layer of repellent. tsk. tsk. But I see that the children playing with us were having fun more completely.
How nice to run around barefooted also. It seems we will do that for foot reflexology sake only.
The dirt didn't bother them.
The mossies also did not bother them.
Must really learn to be like them.

Personal Growth

Manage Your Time More Effectively

How often do you take on more than you can possibly handle? Unfortunately,

this seems to be the "norm" in our world today. Attempting to do more

tasks than you have the time or ability to handle can lead to missed

deadlines, less-polished or sloppy work, and missed opportunities.

Missed deadlines – When you take on more than you can handle, you

will miss deadlines on a regular basis. Missed deadlines and

less-polished or sloppy work can adversely affect your service image

with your clients and prospects. They will lose faith in your

ability to deliver the level of service and communication they

require.

Missed opportunities – When you live your life always on overload, it

doesn't allow you to take advantage of opportunities that arise in

life and business. You might be given the opportunity to meet and/or

network with someone important in your business – but if your

schedule has no "give" to it, you could miss out! When scheduling

your day, allow some extra time for each appointment. If you don't

need the extra time with that client/prospect, it becomes bonus time

you can use to brainstorm possible new ideas!

We are all given only so much time each day – be sure you are investing

yours wisely!

Learn to "read the skies".

Imagine you are setting off on a journey where you will need to strike out

on your own, and you must decide what you would need to bring onboard your

little boat.

It is likewise with business-planning. We do not just plan how to get to

the desired destination. We still have to plan for bad weather and how we

will tide through turbulent seas.

Other than a good reliable map, we will need a good compass also. The

weather frequently changes. The successful business is one that is

well-prepared for changes.

A Tale of 2 Cities

"There are 2 types of people who lived on earth. One lived in the forgotten city up in the mountains while the other lived deep down in the valleys beneathe.

Those who lived in the higher planes had work to do and they worked like mad.
The other type were those who stopped behaving like they badly needed a living or they would have to behave like mad and so they just ended up like "live & let live". Which in fact, meant that they were plain existing, not living.

These two groups of people really resented each other to the core. It probably came from so far back in time that now one could only guess how it all began.

As I have said, the mad ones lived high up on the mountains. They had slowly made their progress over time. Once the human-kinds were able to control their environments, they moved towards the moutains. It had been a long and ardous journey for early mankind. But soon, they finally conquered their external environments and inhabited the highlands, where the grasses were richer, air fresher, water cleaner and food in greater abundance.

However, soon these too began to dwindle as they improved economically and became heavily industrialised. They had learnt to synthesise their own food, which are so far advanced than the primary produce of the land. However, these by-products wasted the environments they lived in. There came a time when they realised their bodies had to work very hard at keeping up with the pace of life. Even the industrialised air would need fuel to clean them up before they could breathe effortlessly. To keep to their pace of life, they had to "work like mad". Soon after, the predictable happened. Those who finally succumbed to their fatique began their descend to the earth below. Others just obeyed the laws of gravity and tumbled downhill."

"Interesting tho, those who remained on the mountains, felt a certain disregard for those inhabitants below. Soon the age-gaps became apparent. Those who made their descend were mostly older than those energetic ones living the high-life on top."

Old quotes from a friend

Some quotes (contributions from a friend)

We think we see the world as it is, when in fact we see the world as we are.

When you're thirsty, it's too late to think about digging a well.

We shouldn't get too wrapped up in one aspect of life. If we do, we close ourselves off to new experiences.

To keep the lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.

They cannot take away our respect if we do not give it to them.

Each of us makes his own weather, determines the colour of the skies in the emotional universe which he inhabits.

See every problem as an opportunity to exercise creative creative energy.

Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach him to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

It doesn't really matter how fast you're going if you're heading in a the wrong direction.

Covetousness

Covetousness is a very bad thing we should guard ourselves against. In this world, we can see the impacts when people covet other people's lifestyles, earthly possessions, positions on the corporate ladder, and also sometimes, on the menu too, people's girlfriends or wives. Covetousness, Lust, Greed .. whatever. Guard against all these.

Robert Kiyosaki and Steven Covey had both given the same advice in one respect: that one of our primary goals in life is first, to Mind Our Own Business(es). You see, covetousness is also a main cause of most office politics.

The need for power, fame, or recognition. If the need is too strong, and the end justifies the means, surely wickedness of the heart will arise. Cain did that to his brother, Abel, because he was coveting the favour Abel had received from God.

I am sure there are a few "Cains" within our department. We just have to watch out for their ploys and their liberties with which they took advantage of your trust in their advices. Covetousness is not just problem which bad politicians have. We are also vulnerable to commit the same sin. Therefore, we must understand this bug lurking within our psychological make up so that we can also guard ourselves against being unwitting participants to political games that people play in the office.

Put in another way, the bible says that one should be shrewd unto evil so that one can still choose to remain right with God and act wisely.

Mica 6:8 says:
"He has shown thee, O Man, what is good and does the Lord requires of you: But to do justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly in the Lord."

Madness

Normally I'd ask for opinions, just in case I am wrong. But this one, I still believe I am right.

I have always believe that inside everyone of us, there is this certain form of "madness". Or certain degree of "madness", if you would allow me to rephrase it. I believe that if we could consider the term carefully, all of us has this little hidden "weakness", or "fetish", or "taboo", or rather "predictable inclination", if you like.

Some people harbour a deep-seeded need for attention, for compliments, or some form of recognition. Some become extremely competitive in nature and they are easily jealous whenever they see others who are successful. Others have trouble taking rejections.

If I read Carnegie's theories correctly, there are some people who have the strong need to feel accepted; they must have some people they can become a part of. But their lack of security urges them to move from cliques to cliques because of their own need to feel they belonged (somewhere).

Some people may have a strong need to have their opinions accepted, if by accepting what they say could be translated to mean accepting them. So you may be thinking I could possibly share this same madness to a certain extent but still, I believe you do not have to accept everything I say. This is just the "backyard"and not a "showroom".

I am just killing my time and hopefully, my stress get killed too, while waiting for something to move in 15mins' time.

Back to this topic about "madness". However you would define madness, do you think Saddam was "mad"? Would you be able to diagnose whether Hitler was mad or not just by engaging in any conversation with him? Each had contributed to many deaths. Maybe for a cause they were seriously serious about. They had achieved much. But something was seriously wrong.

Many great leaders would share some common traits. But in my personal opinion, there are also some deadly combinations of traits that could make them "dangerous". Two of which :- Power-lust and Hubris.

You can trust someone with a great responsibility or duty. But if that someone is unable to curb any secret weaknesses, you can't 100% trust that "emotional moron" with a whip. In life, you must see not just how one achieves or handles successes, but rather, how one handles failures in his or her life. That should offer a good clue as to how good a leader that person will be, someday.
Nowadays, it is not difficult to meet someone who is normally never wrong. But if ever he ever was wrong, it will be because he had been misinformed. or worse yet, "betrayed".

According to an article from Straits Times, people suffering from hubris would tend to have all the right reasons to do whatever they do. I guess anyone else suffering from that same complex would probably feel justified in purging the society from evil. Just same like equating "stalking" a sweet young thing to playing guardian angel. We humans do have to stay objective and steer from being too close to that thin line between sanity and deep emotional problem. Thankfully, some of the weird patients I know, are just suffering from a mild form of this madness. They are probably just indulging in bitching around people's businesses and carrying out character assasination in the department.

This is about a common-man's madness. You do not need to wait till you have been stalking somebody lately to know you already are.

Coffee Prince

Watched CP these past few days. Abt this guy and this tomboy.
This tomboy really look like Rachel. Anyway, interesting concepts regarding their little Cafe.
hehe... Akan Datang!!!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Anyway, there is a dreadful big event going on. But I shant dwell on it for now because tomorrow will come, as it will come.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Eversince starting on this current JOB, I have been missing so many sunsets. Each night I would go home, alone, cruising alongside the east coast. Only the moon would have known. Not sure if many people would feel the same way I am feeling. I miss the sunsets across the highway, across the eastcoast.... and especially the one just setting above Bedok Reservoir so many years ago. They have all gone now.

Secretz Dream for Em

A sweet dream for you, em yeu. I copied this idea from a website.
How? There will be starlights.... :) Either glow in the dark, or LEDs between interlaced glass-sheets.

Ron explained David's Ice-Hole Fall Theory

Theory of David's Ice-hole Fall as explained by Ron:

A man was walking across a frozen lake one day.
Suddenly the ice cracked beneath his foot and down he fell. He quickly sunk a few metres deeper before his survival instincts kicked in and very quickly, he kicked hard.

As he kicked frantically and rose to the surface, his head bobbed against the bottom of the ice sheet and down he went again. He missed the hole through which he had fallen. This time, he struggled even harder as fear gripped him.

That moment in his life, whether he would manage to save himself, would depend not just on how hard he kicked, but rather, whether he bothered to get his bearing right.

Sense, Nonsense and No-Sense

Just realised that there are really distinct differences. Some senses are known only to the author. Some, unfortunately, are not. So the rest of us on the outside can't make sense out of it. Some common senses appear non-sensical, or are really as they are: simply nonsense. Geddit? Ahh.. what I am blabbing about? Sense, No-sense or Nonsense?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Qns: What does "Face-Time" mean? Ans: Time required to meet and talk face-to-face.

Management Consultants: "What a delight having people asking you questions and watching them copy down your answers." (Quoted)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Life is like a massive stock exchange game. Some people gamble away their lives and even the possessions of those around them. Some speculate and trade against others. They are adept at playing grapevines and political games in the companies, nevermind if they have not any portfolio in the said-companies. This is not insider-trading. I think there is a term to call such people in the world outside. There is a very thin line tho.. between people who seek personal gains at the expense of stumbling others, and people make stumbling others into a sport.

The Wisdom of Wolves: Nature's Way to Organisational Success (by Twyman Towery)

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

This week has been filled with very trying moments indeed. Had never seen someone so distressed and sad. Sometimes, we wonder why there are so many people suffering so much pains and so deep inside that medicine don't seem able to reach.

I also believe medication is not THE answer to our ailments. I also believe it is usually more spiritual than physical or emotional.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

To some extent, I think we are all mad. Judging by the way we have displayed our unique behavoirs and thinking patterns. If we have some unresolved issues in our hearts, they may re-surface in our latter years. Trust me.. it is better to deal with these feelings now than let it all get bottled up.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Tomorrow is another day. I am not sure whether I should allow myself to go into madness or not. But I certainly do not want to have dementia or Alzheimer. This is bad.. to lose every recollection of my time and relationships with my good friends and families. And lose sense of time and place. I will stand alone... isolated and very very alone. I feel locked in.. and although everyone is with me, I hurt everyone who loves me most. I think this is terrible for both the inflicted and the families. It is both frustrating and deeply painful. So sometimes I wonder why God still chooses to remain silent. Why let the devils utter their nonsense instead? This is the time I wish God is right beside His child. He is not going mad. Pls do not let him lose himself. What plans has God for him... I do not know. But I am really sad and drained right now. I am tired.. and also worried if I will also sink into it myself one day.

I wish this world doesn't have to drive us all like this....

Loss before it is

March has begun with a very bad start. Worrisome...

I think it is bad for many people that I know. At work, at home, in Business and also in their social network. I really wonder why ... so many bad news. But I do not know how I should move ahead.

For me, there seems to be no other way out. I tend to wait. I wait for the rain to come and sit there like the buffalo for its due. "The creatures of the earth look to Thee for their meat." The path is narrow and the forest thickens as I step deeper and deeper into it. Night is approaching. The light is fading out, it seems. Now someone gave me 2 options. Though I see light at each end of the path, its the thickening vegetation that worries me. I have slowed down a lot already. Now that we have reached a fork junction, someone again asked me to make my choice - but little do they know, they had given me 2 out of 3 options. By choosing my own options, perhaps this might have been an entirely different forest altogether. Anyway ... I sworn myself to secrecy. I shall not say. Everything in life is but an imagery. Nothing is permanent. Nothing is real, but not all things are fake. It is just all humans-do-whatt-humans-do on the stage set up by God, perhaps directed by fellow humans. And God would pick up the best ones that He wants to keep. What shall I do? I will do what the road ahead asks of me.

If you ask me how I do it, I can only tell you that it could be easier if I just walk blindfolded. Chrisians call it blindfaith. Do you know why a bird stays still after a while? I know. I've seen it there. The cage was big and after a while, it grew tired. It can go as it pleases yet it can't go as it pleases. I can feel its weariness, and the energy rapidly dissipating everytime it flaps it wings. It's a real big world we are all sitting trapped in.

I see old people walking down the streets. I see others playing chess. I also see yet others splurging whatever remains in their pockets. Many should have seen what I saw. They had been there. Now they stayed. Soon, I will be playing chess like everyone else and waiting for my turn. Meanwhile, I have to move on ... nudged on. And along this path ... Hope it leads to freedom and I'd have lived another day. Thank God.

digital art - for my colleagues

Like movie huh?
This was an amatuer's first atttempt at artistic photographic work. Something I would like to embark on as part of my retyrement plan.

The damsel's portraiture was taken by my colleague (the handsome guy in the background). I was only practising how to remove parts of a subject in a photo from its background using the magic wand. Unfotunately, as I still had problems trying to extract the loose strands of hair (above the girl's right shoulder), I am sure you could easily notice the jagged edges left behind by a poor extraction. So in the end I chose a much darker backdrop. On hindsight, it would have been better if I had jus snipped off that affeced portion. hmm....

Anyway, hope you all like it.

Next time I will try watercolour backgrounds.... :)
Hey, one of my dreams is to be a famous wedding photographer, like Hilarion Goh!!!
He is already a well-known photographer in cyberspace now.

Thanks for reading my blogs. I hope they have been enriching, as well as entertaining :)

Make my day.

I am waiting for the tow-truck!!
2nd time in a week! One day apart from another!

Somehow I must still make this day special. This is my day! This day has got to be special. Yesterday I was upset how fast time flies and I realised I had been feeling the loss more because I turned back my head and saw the day zoomed past me.

Today, I must start looking forward! What is past, is past and stays past.
Face forward - in the direction where your feet are pointing towards.

So, this is my day - no matter what!

Blind Man Driving

Suddenly I have just realised something. But it took me too long....

How fast time flies. Each time when I face my blog, I would just feel stressed because it is another weekend again.

Hey, It’s Saturday again! This is a Saturday in February in 2008. Since when I had started counting the Saturdays? I think since 2004. Now, it is 2008. So I have been 4 years behind schedule.

4 years ago, I embarked on a course which I had failed to complete. Needless to say, think I have wasted way too much money (and time) on my own education. Now it has to be application time.
Actually, and looking back, I shouldn’t have been asking myself what I had been doing these past weeks that flew past. Christmases, New Year Days, Birthdays, Anniversaries ..... Hey, they are past, the moment they slipped by. If I am just focussing on re-catching the sand that has just slipped through my fingers, I will only lose even more that are still in my hand.

"What should next Saturday be?"

This should have been the right question I should be asking myself all along.

I promise my life has to be DIFFERENT. So I shouldn't have been driving forward by looking in the rear-view mirror. So, to move forward, I should be looking forward!

HABIT #7 - THINK WIN-WIN

As mentioned upfront, political conflicts happen because of conflicting interests. Perhaps due to our schooling, we are taught that to win, someone else needs to lose. Conversely, we are afraid to let someone else win, because it implies losing for us.

In business and work, that doesn’t have to be the case. Learn to think in terms of “how can we both win out of this situation?”

This requires that you first understand the other party’s perspective and what’s in it for him. Next, understand what’s in it for you. Strive to seek out a resolution that is acceptable and beneficial to both parties. Doing this will ensure that everyone truly commit to the agreed resolution and not pay only lip-service to it.

People simply don’t like to lose. You may get away with win-lose tactics once or twice, but very soon, you’ll find yourself without allies in the workplace. Thinking win-win is an enduring strategy that builds allies and help you win in the long term.

HABIT #6 - SEEK TO UNDERSTAND, BEFORE BEING UNDERSTOOD

The reason people feel unjustified is because they felt misunderstood. Instinctively, we are more interested in getting the others to understand us than to understand them first. Top people managers and business leaders have learned to suppress this urge.

Surprisingly, seeking to understand is a very disarming technique. Once the other party feels that you understand where he/she is coming from, they will feel less defensive and be open to understand you in return. This sets the stage for open communications to arrive at a solution that both parties can accept. Trying to arrive at a solution without first having this understanding is very difficult - there’s little trust and too much second-guessing.

HABIT #5 - DON’T GET PERSONAL

In office politics, you’ll get angry with people. It happens. There will be times when you feel the urge to give that person a piece of your mind and teach him a lesson. Don’t.

People tend to remember moments when they were humiliated or insulted.

Even if you win this argument and get to feel really good about it for now, you’ll pay the price later when you need help from this person. What goes around comes around, especially at the work place. To win in the office, you’ll want to build a network of allies which you can tap into. The last thing you want during a crisis or an opportunity is to have someone screw you up because they habour ill-intentions towards you - all because you’d enjoyed a brief moment of emotional outburst at their expense.

Another reason to hold back your temper is your career advancement. Increasingly, organizations are using 360 degree reviews to promote someone. Even if you are a star performer, your boss will have to fight a political uphill battle if other managers or peers see you as someone who is difficult to work with. The last thing you’ll want is to make it difficult for your boss to champion you for a promotion.

HABIT #4 - DON’T TAKE SIDES

In office politics, it is possible to find yourself stuck in between two power figures who are at odds with each other. You find yourself being thrown around while they try to outwit each other and defend their own position. All at the expense of you getting the job done. You can’t get them to agree on a common decision for a project, and neither of them want to take ownership of issues; they’re too afraid they’ll get stabbed in the back for any mishaps.

In cases like this, focus on the business objectives and don’t take side with either of them - even if you like one better than the other. Place them on a common communication platform and ensure open communications among all parties so that no one can claim “I didn’t say that”.

By not taking sides, you’ll help to direct conflict resolution in an objective manner. You’ll also build trust with both parties. That’ll help to keep the engagements constructive and focus on business objectives.

HABIT #3 - FOCUS ON YOUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE

At work, there are often issues which we have very little control over. It’s not uncommon to find corporate policies, client demands or boss mandates which affects your personal interests. Bitching and complaining are common responses to these events that we cannot control. But think about it, other than that short term emotional outlet, what tangible results do bitching really accomplish? In most instances, none.

Instead of feeling victimized and angry about the situation, focus on the things that you can do to influence the situation - your circle of influence.

This is a very empowering technique to overcome the feeling of helplessness. It removes the victimized feeling and also allows others to see you as someone who knows how to operate within given constraints. You may not be able to change or decide on the eventual outcome, but you can walk away knowing that you have done the best within the given circumstances. Constraints are all around in the workplace; with this approach, your boss will also come to appreciate you as someone who is understanding and positive.

HABIT #2 - KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE

When conflicts happens, it’s very easy to be sucked into tunnel-vision and focus on immediate differences. That’s a self-defeating approach. Chances are you’ll only invite more resistance by focusing on differences in people’s positions or opinions.

The way to mitigate this without looking like you’re fighting to emerge as a winner in this conflict is to focus on the business objectives. In the light of what’s best for the business, discuss the pros and cons of each option. Eventually, everyone wants the business to be successful; if the business don’t win, then nobody in the organization wins. It’s much easier for one to eat the humble pie and back off when they realize the chosen approach is best for the business.

By learning to steer the discussion in this direction, you will learn to disengage from petty differences and position yourself as someone who is interested in getting things done. Your boss will also come to appreciate you as someone who is mature, strategic and can be entrusted with bigger responsibilities.

An Entrepreuner and A Businessman

What makes someone an entrepreneur and someone else a businessman?

A businessman is tied to his business. He could have started it through innovation, or through sheer hardwork and took over the rein from somebody else. But he has an obligation to tend to his business to prevent it from failing. Sometimes, he has to cut losses if his business doesn't seem to do well. What makes a good businessman and what makes one a poor businessman?

There has to be 1 right decision, 1 wrong decision and 1 no-decision.

But there can be only 1 bad outcome out of all outcomes, if I had chosen to act on the decisions that I have made.

1. Right Execution at the right time

2. Execution at a less ideal time

3. Wrong execution

Many of us have dreams of making money but only the one who dares stretch out his hand and asks for a dollar, makes a dollar. But in order to be successful, this has to be consistent and repeatable with consistent results. I would feel a beggar who has consistent takings everday by investing his time sitting in the street has better ROI than the one sitting down here penning it all down on his blogs :)

But I won't beg. Yet, if I still do not seek, I will not find. If I refuse to learn to ask, I will never learn.

7 Habits To Win In Office Politics

Office politics - a taboo word for some people. It’s a pervasive thing at the workplace. In it’s simplest form, office politics is simply about the differences between people at work; differences in opinions, conflicts of interests are often manifested as office politics. It all goes down to human communications and relationships.

There is no need to be afraid of office politics. Top performers are those who have mastered the art of winning in office politics.

I have found a site which shows these 7 habits are applicable in the corporate warzone. (Sorry, i lost the web-address.) The reason I feel compelled to bring these up here is because I strongly believe in the 7 Habits and as will be discussed over the next few pages on my blogs, I do hope that all my friends who happen to be reading these will be edified by them.

7 good habits to help you win at the workplace:

HABIT #1 - BE AWARE YOU HAVE A CHOICE

The most common reactions to politics at work are either fight or flight. It’s normal human reaction for survival in the wild, back in the prehistoric days when we were still hunter-gatherers. Sure, the office is a modern jungle, but it takes more than just instinctive reactions to win in office politics. Instinctive fight reactions will only cause more resistance to whatever you are trying to achieve; while instinctive flight reactions only label you as a pushover that people can easily take for granted. Neither options are appealing for healthy career growth.

Winning requires you to consciously choose your reactions to the situation.

Recognize that no matter how bad the circumstances, you have a choice in choosing how you feel and react. So how do you choose? This bring us to the next point…

Work smarter, not harder

Once upon a time there was this quaint little village.

It was a great place to live except for one problem.

The village had no water unless it rained.

To solve this problem once and for all, the village

elders decided to put out to bid the contract to have

water delivered to the village on a daily basis.

Two people volunteered to take on the task and the

elders awarded the contract to both of them. They felt

that a little competition would keep prices low and

ensure a backup supply of water.

Self-employed thinking

The first of the two people, Ed, immediately ran out,

bought two galvanized steel buckets and began running

back and forth along the trail to the lake which was a

mile away.

He immediately began making money as he labored

morning to dusk hauling water from the lake with his

two buckets. He would empty them into the large

concrete holding tank the village had built.

Each morning he had to get up before the rest of the

village awoke to make sure there was enough water for

the village when it wanted it. It was hard work, but

he was very happy to be making money and for having

one of the two exclusive contracts for this business.

Business owner thinking

The second winning contractor, Bill, disappeared for a

while. He was not seen for months, which made Ed very

happy since he had no competition. Ed was making all

the money.

Instead of buying two buckets to compete with Ed, Bill

had written a business plan, created a corporation,

found four investors, employed a president to do the

work, and returned six months later with a

construction crew.

Within a year his team had built a large volume

stainless steel pipeline, which connected the village

to the lake.

At the grand opening celebration, Bill announced that

his water was cleaner than Ed's water. Bill knew that

there had been complaints about dirt in Ed's water.

Bill also announced that he could supply the village

with water 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Ed could

only deliver water on the weekdays. He did not work on

weekends.

Then Bill announced that he would charge 75% less than

Ed did for this higher quality and more reliable

source of water. The village cheered and ran

immediately for the faucet at the end of Bill's

pipeline.

In order to compete, Ed immediately lowered his rates

by 75%, bought two more buckets, added covers to his

buckets, and began hauling four buckets each trip. In

order to provide better service, he hired his two sons

to give him a hand for the night shift and on

weekends.

When his boys went off to college, he said to them,

"Hurry back because someday this business will belong

to you." For some reason, after college, his two sons

never returned. Eventually Ed had employees and union

problems. The union was demanding higher wages, better

benefits, and wanted its members to only haul one

bucket at a time.

Bill, on the other hand, realized that if this village

needed water, then other villages must need water too.

He rewrote his business plan and went off to sell his

high speed, high volume, and low cost, clean water

delivery system to villages throughout the world.

He only makes a penny per bucket of water delivered,

but he delivers billions of buckets of water, and all

that money pours into his bank account. Bill had

developed a pipeline to deliver money to himself as

well as water to the villages.

Bill lived happily ever after, and Ed worked hard for

the rest of his life and had financial problems

forever after. The end.

That story about Bill and Ed has guided me for years.

It has assisted me in my life's decision-making

process. I often ask myself, "Am I building a pipeline

or hauling buckets?" Am I working hard or am I working

smart?"

And the answers to those questions have made me

financially free. (Roberrt Kiyosaki)

Happiness & Love

There was this story about a pair of star-crossed lovers.
They had met despite many hardships and disapprovals. But each has a certain belief, that each would deserve a happy life and that each of them would eventually die. So instead of giving in to what had been ingrained deep within their souls, they decided to give their all to each other and vow to make the other person happier.

Raising Your Personal Standards

Destiny is not a matter of chance
It is a matter of choice

~William Jennings Bryan

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Stagnation and slacking at work is very common. Few of us are ambitious and self-motivated enough to maintain an optimum level of performance at all times.
However, to develop and mature at our jobs, we need to periodically raise our personal standards. Otherwise, our work will in time begin to feel mundane and our attitude will begin to look sloppy. This in turn affects job satisfaction and career prospects.

Our personal standards are benchmarks we set for ourselves. They're related to how we treat and perceive ourselves, how we interact with others, the words we use, the attitudes and values we project, and our behavioural patterns. They can be reviewed and changed as we mature as human beings.

Here are some simple tips for raising your personal standards at work or at home:

- Make a list of the people you admire. The traits you have a high regard for could be patience, the ability to persuade others to see their point, being punctual, or kind. So these people could be your peers, your superiors, your subordinates, the mailman or the cleaning lady. Observe them and emulate how they handle tough situations.

- Try to be "unconditionally-constructive" each time you speak while still saying all you need to say. Most people criticise without being able to come up with solutions, or only see the negative in everything. Practice being constructive about as many things as you can and you'll increase your self-worth and your value as a worker. You'll also inspire others to be more optimistic and cheerful.

- When mistakes or mishaps occur in your "space" or your sphere of work, learn to accept the responsibility, but not the blame. Deal with the situation and raise your standards so it doesn't happen again.

- In the corporate world, it seems like a good idea to make results and goals number one on your list of priorities. But ask any successful and influential manager or supervisor, and he or she will tell you that putting people and relationships above results is the key to long term job satisfaction and corporate success.

- What are the things around your office that you tolerate but which continue to drain your energy? It could be an aspect of your work that is time-consuming or menial, but ultimately contributes little or nothing to the quality of your work. Do them, delegate them or discard them if you think they cannot be changed to benefit you or your company.
And those are a few ways you can raise your personal standards and in turn increase your value at work.

Do No Harm

“How you do anything is how you do everything.”
~ T. Harv Eker

I've been bothered and saddened by some things recently.
This jungle has gotten more and more dangerous.

Recently, the chief rounded up a small exploration team.
The group dynamics does not seem to promise a peaceful outcome, not to mention, a happy one.

Life has been nice although at the back of my mind, this river is running dry soon. I don't personally see anything else better for myself nowadays. So you can guess how bleak my future seems, if you know what I've been trying to say. Maybe I am a pessismist. But then, we will soon find out.

Changing Your Perception

Albert Einstein famously remarked :

"There are only two ways to live your life.
One is as though nothing is a miracle.
The other is as though everything is."

Einstein was referring to perception and how every often, how well or how badly you feel about something is due entirely to the way you see it. You can instantly change your emotional state by changing the way you perceive the situation. We live in an age of unprecedented equality - many of us have access to the same opportunities to improve our lives. Yet we find there is a whole spectrum of people stuck between Depressed and Joyful, between Yearning for More and Contented. Two persons can have the same experience and respond very differently. Scientists used to believe that we respond to information flowing into the brain, but we now know, scientifically, that it is actually our interpretation of the information that determines our response. Our past experiences create an expectancy that is primarily based on what we "know" and what we "know" is that which has happened before. Our belief system is one of the main ways in which our minds make sense of the world.

A belief is a sense of certainty about what something means and they're mostly formed and hardened by past experiences. In essence, we make expectations about something based on what's happened before. For example, you might believe that you never get second dates because no one's agreed to it in the past. As a result, you go for that first date with a gloomy forecast of what's to come and don't make any effort to encourage a second date. After the date, you don't follow-up or call to arrange another meeting. Needless to say, a second date doesn't happen. You believe it's because you're undesirable, but the real reason is simply that your limiting belief had caused you to sabotage your own chances!

Perception is a way of grasping and making sense of the "realities" around us. Perception links a meaning to what you take in with your senses that allows you to have the experience in your nervous system. Because perception is based on interpretation we can change it. A change in perception is what turns the half empty glass into a half full glass. Perception explains how two people can have exactly the same experience and one commits suicide while the other becomes an inspiration for generations to come. Whatever you perceive is going to be true for you, regardless of what you see.

Change your beliefs, change your perceptions, and you can change your life.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because
Those who mind don't matter and
Those who matter don't mind.

~Dr. Seuss

IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN,YOU PLAN TO FAIL

Retirement is all in the planning, if you are planning to live out your Golden Years in style and comfort. Unfortunately most of us fail to plan adequately for our retirement. Why?
Quite simple it's intangible. It's too far off and we can't quite see ourselves retired. It's one of those things that will come around one day, but until it does, we have too much else on our plate to worry about it.

Besides, we are saving something so it will be OK. Think again.
Remember when we were 20, 40 seemed a lifetime away? As sure as you will/have hit 40, retirement will happen, too. And sooner than you think (which is good or bad, depending on how you have planned it).
Things ain't what they used to be

Most of us have been brought up with the vague notion that just as our grandparents did, we will retire in our sixties when we are forced out of employment, and that as long as we are putting away some savings, we will somehow manage a comfortable retirement. But exactly what is it you are saving for? Things aren't as they used to be, and we are facing a much different retirement scenario than our grandparents. With the rising costs of inflation, the trend towards a nuclear family and the propensity to live longer, retirement could be a long, hard stretch if we don't get the planning right. Government aid and our CPF funds are not going to go far when we could live 30-40 years beyond retirement!

Think financial independence, not retirement
Who says you have to retire at 62? If you have the funds to retire before, why not?

These days, we think in terms of financial independence rather than retirement. Financial independence is an actively planned for state where you become free from financial obligations and are self sufficient without having to work for an income. When you are financially independent, you can choose when to retire. You can be financially free at 45 and choose to work because you love your job, or retire and start living the retirement life you planned. But that's just it!

Without a plan, it's simply not going to happen. Make a plan that makes it real

It's time now to create a very clear picture of when you wish to retire (remember it can be earlier than 62 if you plan it right now!) and the lifestyle you wish to pursue upon retirement. What are your financial commitments now? What commitments will you have in the future (e.g. your children's education)? Factor in the costs of rising inflation, escalating medical costs and the luxury of travel and visualise the average day in your life when retired. Your next step is to contact a financial advisor that won't just try to sell you products. You need a financial advisor that will listen to your plans and goals, will sit down with you and will devise a financial plan that will make your retirement plan work. A good financial advisor will recommend the financial tools that are going to get the job done. A vague plan is no planHowever, if retirement to you is a vague dream, your financial advisor is going to be as much in the dark as you are.

Don't plan to fail by failing to plan.
Visualise your future goals now, and let your financial advisor set you on target to live the long, comfortable retirement of your dreams!

Opportunity

We can all learn a lesson about recognizing opportunity and making the most of a "bad" situation, from Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Airways.

His airline got its start partly because of a last minute flight cancellation.
When his flight to Puerto Rico was cancelled at the last minute, he found a company he could charter a jet from for $2000. Figuring the cost per seat in the jet, he borrowed a blackboard, wrote "Virgin Airlines, $39 single flight to Puerto Rico" and walked around the airport with it.
He filled every seat on the plane, and a new company was born!

How often do we see only the "bad" side of a situation?
Being successful in life and in your business requires that you seize the day. Turn issues into opportunities and negative experiences into new positive processes!

"I am only one, but still I am one; I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do." ~ Edward Everett Hale
